چکیده

We present an approach and numerical results for a new formulation modeling immiscible, compressible two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media with discontinuous capillary pressures. The main feature of this model is the introduction of a new global pressure and it is fully equivalent to the original equations. The resulting equations are written in a fractional flow formulation and lead to a coupled degenerate system which consists of a nonlinear parabolic (the global pressure) equation and a nonlinear diffusion-convection one (the saturation equation) with nonlinear transmission conditions at the interfaces that separate different media. The resulting system is discretized using a vertex-centred finite volume method combined with pressure and flux interface conditions for the treatment of heterogeneities. An implicit Euler approach is used for time discretization. A Godunovtype method is used to treat the convection terms and the diffusion terms are discretized by piecewise linear conforming finite elements. We present numerical simulations for three one-dimensional benchmark tests to demonstrate the ability of the method to approximate solutions of water-gas equations efficiently and accurately in nuclear underground waste disposal situations.

A Novel Approach to Measuring Water and Oil Relative Permeabilities in Two-phase Fluid Flow in Porous Media

In this study, direct laboratory measurements of unsteady-state imbibition test are used in a new approach to obtain relative permeability curves with no predetermined functionality assumptions. Four equations of continuity, Darcy’s law, cumulative oil production, and water fractional flow are employed in combination together under certain assumptions to present the new approach which interpret...

Discontinous Galerkin and Mixed-Hybrid Finite Element Approach to Two-Phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media with Different Capillary Pressures

A modern numerical scheme for simulation of flow of two immiscible and incompressible phases in inhomogeneous porous media is proposed. The method is based on a combination of the mixed-hybrid finite element (MHFE) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. The combined approach allows for accurate approximation of the flux at the boundary between neighboring finite elements, especially in hetero...

Modeling and Numerical Simulations of Immiscible Compressible Two-Phase Flow in Porous Media by the Concept of Global Pressure

A new formulation is presented for the modeling of immiscible compressible two-phase flow in porous media taking into account gravity, capillary effects and heterogeneity. The formulation is intended for the numerical simulation of multi-dimensional flows and is fully equivalent to the original equations, unlike the one introduced in Chavent and Jaffré (1986). The main feature of this formulati...

An Existence Result for Multidimensional Immiscible Two-Phase Flows with Discontinuous Capillary Pressure Field

We consider the system of equations governing an incompressible immiscible two-phase flow within an heterogeneous porous medium made of two different rock types. Since the capillary pressure function depends on the rock type, the capillary pressure field might be discontinuous at the interface between the rocks. We introduce multivalued phase pressures to give a sense to the transmission condit...

Numerical Simulation and Estimation of the Transvers Macrodispersivity Coefficient of Aqueous Phase (Miscible) Contaminants of Salt Water in a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Porous Media

Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...
